Hello from Stewart

Hello friends of THT.
I thought I would take this opportunity to introduce myself as THT’s new North of Scotland Services Manager. My name is Stewart Cunningham and I have been in post since 1st December 2008. I am new to the North of Scotland and also to the field of sexual health having moved from Glasgow where I worked as a solicitor specialising in immigration and asylum law.

Although I have only been in post for a couple of weeks I am already impressed by the range of services provided by the THT Highland team. I look forward to working with the team to continue the good work and to look at ways in which we can develop our services in Highland and Argyll and Bute. I am also keen to meet more of our service users to hear first hand your thoughts and views on THT’s services so please feel free to e-mail me, phone me or pop into the office. You will always be welcome.

Dear Friends,

First of all Ailsa, Stewart, Agnes, Katrina, Tine, Lisa, Fiona and our volunteers wish all of you a ‘grand’ 2009.

As new years always make for good intentions, we came up with a few new initiatives. To increase our support for the LGBT community in Highland we are starting a monthly social evening for MSM - men who have sex with men (whether they identify as being gay, bisexual or not) and a monthly social evening for WSW - women who have sex with women (whether they identify as being lesbian, bisexual or not) in Inverness. Just come along, chill out, bring some friends, and meet some new people in the cosy sitting room at Terrence Higgins Trust Scotland. We are very happy to welcome you. The first MSM evening takes place on 7 January and the first WSW evening on 28 January. These evenings will complement our other activities and the other social LGBT evenings that are taking place in Caithness and Lochaber.

Some people like to watch movies, some like to chill out and have a chat, some people like to sit down and talk about more serious things. Some people like all of this. From this month onwards a philosophy club will open its doors at THT, maybe I should say open its gates because the name of this club is the ‘Pink Castle’. The ‘Pink Castle’ is a place and an opportunity for friends of Terrence Higgins Trust Scotland to stretch their minds within an atmosphere of peace and fun. These philosophy evenings will take place on a monthly basis at THT, Inverness and will be facilitated by Morgan. We would like to open the ‘castle gates’ with the following question: "Safe sex could save my life so I can live it to the full." If we all know this then why is the rate of sexually transmitted infections, such as HIV, soaring? Knowing does not seem to result in doing. Is heart locked in a battle with mind? What do you think? Let’s talk about it on 13 January from 7-9pm.

Enjoy, come out, meet new people, have a complementary care session. With our programme we certainly try to pamper you! Agnes and Katrina

Newsletter

Dear friends,
December has arrived, 2008 is running on its last legs and everyone is looking forward to celebrating the seasonal holidays. However, before we reach the celebration bit, we have a few exciting things to announce:

THT Highland Services has a new manager; his name is Stewart Cunningham, he joined us on 1st December 2008. Once he has recovered from his move from Lanarkshire he will be getting around his new ‘patch’, so look out for him. Stewart would be happy to meet service users and representatives of partner agencies at our Inverness offices over the coming weeks – so drop in!

From this month onwards we are offering a new service to all our service users, Complementary Care. A group of qualified practitioners offer you massage, reflexology, osteopathy, metamorphic technique, acupuncture and dietary advice. Included with the newsletter, you can find a leaflet that explains it in more detail. Please ring our office for more information or to make an appointment - a nice treat for yourself just before the end of the year?

This month’s programme is slightly different from usual: the T group (for people identifying as transgender), LGBT Caithness (social group for LGBT people) and the HIV+ support group are each having a meal out which is great. People have been meeting regularly over the year, friendships have developed, support has been given and it is lovely to enjoy each other’s company over a meal. So, I hope that you look forward to these events as much as I do and I look forward to meeting some of you there. Don’t forget that there is also the film evening; we are starting to have a regular little group of people who come along and enjoy watching not just any movies but good quality LGBT movies. You do not see them very often in mainstream film theatres!

The many corners of Argyll and Bute have been receiving World Aids Day posters and red ribbons – hopefully you’ll spot a poster at your local surgery or a red ribbon pinned to the person of your doctor, nurse, teacher or youth worker. And Katrina will be talking to young people in Tarbert, Lochgilphead and Tobermory about HIV, and LGBT equality at the beginning of December, which should be a lot of fun!

Happy New Year from the whole team!

Movie Evening

Kissing Jessica Stein
Helen Cooper (Heather Juergensen) is a fairly successful art gallery manager who is fed up with having quickie sex with various men, including her delivery guy, in various times and places. Confused about her sexual orientation, as if she thinks she may be a lesbian in denial, Helen puts a personal ad in a local newspaper asking for a date with someone.
